Matte PLA has a flat, non-reflective surface that hides layer lines far better than glossy plastics. Prints look closer to injection-moulded or painted parts straight off the printer, which makes it a favourite for client presentation models, product mock-ups and display pieces.

Design guidelines for Matte PLA parts
Follow these when preparing your file. Our team also checks every order before printing and flags anything that needs changing.
- Minimum wall thickness
- 1.2 mm; 2–3 mm for load-bearing walls
- Unsupported overhangs
- Up to 45° without supports
- Minimum hole diameter
- 2 mm (drill out for precise fits)
- Clearance for moving fits
- 0.3–0.5 mm per side
- Embossed / engraved text
- At least 0.8 mm deep, 1.5 mm stroke
- Typical tolerance
- ±0.2 mm

01 Why choose Matte PLA over standard PLA?
Matte PLA hides layer lines and looks more finished, so it is better for anything people will see and judge: presentation models, mock-ups and display pieces. Standard PLA is fine for internal prototypes.
02 Is Matte PLA as strong as standard PLA?
It is similar for everyday use, though slightly more brittle. For functional parts that take loads, standard PLA, PETG or a nylon composite is a better choice.
03 Can Matte PLA be painted?
Yes. The matte surface takes primer and paint well, though many customers find it looks good enough unpainted.
